Chief Scout - Oh Shit ( Song Review )

Chief Scout are from Athens Georgia in the U.S.A.  I just came across them this morning in a live video from the YouTube channel Athens Ga Live Music.  I would say they are an Alternate Indie Rock Band and I was rather surprised to hear such catchy and melodic tunes. They are a 3 piece band of guitar, bass and drums. The lead guitarist fills out songs nicely with catchy melodies, but at the same time his playing style is dynamic... ranging from very heavy to soft. The bassist also has an interesting style, that works in a totally different ranges of the songs. Basically he is just not following what the lead guitarist is doing chord or note wise and that's a good thing! The bassist is basically filling out the rest of the song and adding his own personality when its needed. The drummer plays in a way that fits well with the dynamic of the band and is not overwhelming the songs and knowing when to hold back and using restraint when needed, but at the same time knowing when to rock and play heavily. The lead singers vocal style is of its own, meaning it has its own, one of kind quality and does not sound like most typical alternate indie rock groups.

The song "Oh Shit" is quite a nice and catchy fulfilling song and the music video is surprisingly entertaining! I like the lead guitarists / singers guitar riffs. The song has a way of taking you on a journey with brief ups and downs to keep you entertained.

Chief Scout have a self titled album out now on most all digital sites such as Apple Music and Spotify.

Here are a few links so you can learn more about the band.

Rihanna - Work (Explicit) ft. Drake ( Song Review )

Ok so as of this date, this is currently the most popular song in the United States and I am not really sure why, but I am guessing the main reason would have something to do with money. It has been out for about two weeks now and has 4,471,668 plays on Spotify.

Musically the underline base structure of this song is an electronic bass riff that repeats for the entirety of the song. It has about 5 different notes and a 10 year old with a few music lessons could figure the melody in little time at all. Other then the bass riff, there are a few other melodic sounds on top, but the notes are somewhat similar to the main bass line.

The song has very little variation and it has the same tone through out the entire song. The tone is dry sounding and has very few musical highs and lows other then the vocals. The vocals are most dominating feature of the song. Rihanna is a good singer and she has good tone and is able to stay in the correct key. However her overall vocal tone is very stereotypical to current day contemporary pop music. Drake has a brief guest spot on this track and his vocal is tonally similar to Rihanna's vocal and has a similar message.

The subject matter of the song is a basic theme of someone making a lot of time for work and not making time for their love interest.

Overall this song is nothing to dramatic and is very low key and chill.

Cheers:
Ryan
